Good friends, good food and good beer.

I had a mini beer tasting at my place last Saturday. We had wine and cheese to start the evening. I ordered a big platter of sushi rolls from Nama; sushi is good if you know you may be sampling quite a few beers. Something about it (probably the rice) absorbs the alcohol and seems to minimize the hangover (Ol’ Saccy’s tip of the day). We enjoyed the food and then got down to the business of beer.

First up was Left Hand Brewing Company Stranger American Pale Ale. Not bad but I still miss their Jackman’s Pale Ale so I was a bit disappointed.

Next was Abita Pecan Harvest Ale. I liked this better than I thought I would. It had a mild nose but you picked up the nuttiness on the tongue. Not a great beer but it was decent.

This is the Saranac Caramel Porter. You definitely get the caramel flavor. It was good but not great.

Tommyknocker Brewery Maple Nut Brown. Has a sweet nose and is slightly sweet in flavor, you do get a bit of the maple flavor. I enjoyed this beer.

Tommyknocker Cocoa Porter. Definitely had a cocoa nose but was a little lacking in flavor. Not too interesting.

Highland Brewing Company Black Mocha Stout. I’ve had this one before and I still like it!

Just a cute recap picture of most of the beers we’ve tried so far.

Innis & Gunn Original Scottish Ale Oak Aged Beer. This was definitely a favorite of the evening. All 4 tasters enjoyed the vanilla caramel nose. The taste was complex: vanilla, oaky with a hint of scotch and a smoky finish. A great beer.

Highland Brewing Company Cold Mountain Winter Ale. I like this one. It has a strong vanilla nose and taste. The spices are indeed perfect for a winter ale. It was sweet but very drinkable.

Ol’ Saccy got a little daring after several nice pours. This Hitachino Espresso Stout had a nice coffee flavor. It had hints of chocolate and a nice bitter finish. I enjoyed this one very much.

Sinebrychoff Baltic Porter. This was a gift from my guests and it was an amazing beer. Had a nice chocolate nose with mocha flavor and a touch of bitterness. A nice complex and tasty beer. Thanks J and K!!

This Ass Kisser Porter Pounder Smoked Porter was delish! I love the name and it does have a great roasted grain flavor with chocolate and coffee flavors as well.

That’s it for the beer. I earned an embarassing badge from Untappd. “Take it Easy” badge. It pointed that I had drank 12 beers in one day and probably needed to take a cab. Oops. Luckily I was only having samples and I was at home. I will also point out that my guests were walking home.

Had I been a smart dino, we would have called it a night, but I was a bit tipsy and good sense was out the window.

I broke out this bottle of 17 year old scotch that tiny santa got me for being such a good dino this year. My photographers neglected to get a nice picture of the scotch bottle by itself. The BenRiach Single Malt Scotch Whisky Limited Release 1994. In hindsight we should have probably gone with a 1 ounce pour instead of a 2 ounce pour. It was definitely a finisher. Party over. By the way, the sushi did indeed lessen the next day hangover significantly.

It was a great evening with good friends, good food and good beer!
